Belkin wireless routers got into a little bit of controversy recently. It seems that their new routers were actually directing people to an online advertisement for Belkin wireless routers.

Now, this may seem like a cheap shot at the customer, but more importantly, it’s just kind of silly. Why would the user need to see an ad for a product they already own, anyways?

Of course, we’re not here to rag on Belkin wireless routers, but rather, to point out that they’re still a pretty good company, controversy aside.

In the grand scheme of things, getting your customers to look at an ad really isn’t that terrible of a thing to do. Our younger readers may not be old enough to remember this, but back in the eighties, something called “planned obsolecense” was uncovered by a whistle blower.

A number of car manufacturers were actually building cars so that they would break down after a couple years and the driver would have to buy another one. If you want to get into treating your customers poorly, that’s how it’s done.

By contrast, the Belkin wireless routers Scandal really isn’t that big a deal. Rather, it’s more like an internet marketing campaign that was perhaps poorly conceived, but it failed and was abandoned. The fact remains that Belkin still makes some of the fastest, most reliable, and most secure routers available.

So what we’re saying here is: If you were burned by the Belkins Bungle, go ahead and give them another chance. There’s no need to deprive yourself of a great product over a botched marketing campaign.
