Doesn’t work as access point., June 25, 2016

I bought this to function as an access point as DLink advertises that is has this capability. I couldn’t make it work as one – despite the fact I’ve set up numerous ones from other brands before. The feature is present in the most recent firmware, but enabling it caused the device to lock up. Oh well.

I set it up as a regular router to see how it compared to my Asus RT-N56U. In comparison to that, I find that it has a weaker signal (slightly, about 2 dB in both 2.4 and 5 GHz). The Asus doesn’t have any external antennas as this does, so I had my hopes up a little I could find use for it. But when I saw the signal strength was worse, I didn’t bother.

In comparison to the Asus, the web UI is very slow and poorly laid out. The UI would not allow Firefox to remember the admin password for some reason – it kept saying invalid password. Changing the LAN IP to something other than the default caused the admin password to be reset to something other than the default one or what I entered. Factory reset required to recover from that.

All in all, I can’t think of anything good to say about this device. Maybe it was cheap?? As a router it doesn’t work that great, the firmware is very buggy, and worst of all, it didn’t work for the purpose I got it – to be an access point.

    Pros:
    * This is a very good budget wireless router, and would probably be an excellent access point or wireless repeater.
    * This router works fine with Comcast, and has good coverage. I connected this router to a cable modem I bought (the TP-LINK TC-7620), and was able to get ~90Mbs speed through the wired connection, and ~85Mbs via wireless.

    Cons:
    * As others have noted, the speed of the wired ports on the back of the router is actually much less than the speed of the wireless connection. This means that your speed to the internet will never be more than 100Mbs (and will usually be 80 – 90Mbs). You might get a different result if you’re using this as an access point or repeater, but just keep that in mind.
    * The number of channels available to the router is very limited, meaning you will have more issues with congestion in crowded places.

The Wifi connectivity just drops every 10 minutes, if I wired it also still the performance is not great, and to test it when I connect directly to the modem it works just fine, I would like to return the product this is not worth it..
It worked fine for few months but after 2 months it is not working, (we don’t have any windows platform at our home) and also it doesn’t work great for stream boxes like netflix or other app on TV box.

Please return it for me thanks.
