This is a really solid wireless router! It has some quirks, and it’s not perfect, but it’s easily the best and most powerful WiFi router I’ve ever used. It has some really powerful features, like Parental Control and Beam-forming that really set it apart. The design if pretty weird and requires vertical setup, but overall, it’s a fantastic device.

    — PHYSICAL SETUP: —
Setting up the router is really straightforward, albeit pretty odd. It looks like a traditional router, but all the plugs are on the back. It comes with a stand and since the plugs are along the back, the router needs to be setup vertically on the stand. It’s a weird design for sure, and kind of limits the places you can put the router, but it works. You’ll have to find a good spot where it can stand upright.

The packaging comes with an Ethernet cord and the power adapter. Once it’s plugged in and on, it immediately begins broadcasting.

The router also has full gigabit wired Ethernet connections, which is fantastic. Far too many routers these days don’t include gigabit wired connections, so it’s great to find one that does.

    — SOFTWARE SETUP: —
This router comes with a randomized network name and password, which is awesome. There’s no default password for this router, each model has a unique randomized SSID and password. This makes it much more secure. The default SSID and password are printed on the back of the router, so if you ever need to factory reset it, the default settings are right there. Excellent.

The back of the router also lists the default IP address for accessing the router and changing settings. The first time you log in, it walks you through an initial setup where you are prompted to change the default SSID and password, as well as create a password for accessing settings.

The router config page is easy to understand and nicely designed. It has all the important settings you expect out of a router, but it has some excellent additions that really make it stand out.

Parental Control: This lets you set parental control settings on a device-by-device basis. You can change what time of day a particular device is allowed to access the Internet, as well as whitelist/blacklist specific websites. So you could set your child’s laptop to only be allowed to access a handful of websites, for example. Or you could block specific websites and allow all others. It’s a terrific feature that, as a parent myself, I can see being very useful.

Beam-forming: This is the latest WiFi feature that promises longer range and more stable connections. I don’t know how it works, but it is designed to actually direct the WiFi signal toward the devices that are using it. So if you’re sitting outside with your tablet, the router should actually increase signal strength in your direction.

Concurrent 2.4G/5G network naming: This router allows you to set the 2.4 and 5.0 network names to the same thing, and then all of your devices will only see one network. It frees up clutter and makes networking much easier. Your devices should then connect to whichever network is strongest.

Guest Network: Lets you set a guest network with a separate SSID and password.

Sleeping Mode: This is a power saving mode that disables WiFi, USB, and the router’s LEDs during set times of the day. Wired connections stay active in this state. This could be useful for some people, I’m sure.

LED control: A simple checkbox that lets you turn the router’s LEDs on and off. Very useful if it’s in the same room where you’re sleeping. There’s really no need for those LEDs to be blinking 24/7.

App Access: There is even a Tenda app that you can use to manage the router settings easily. I used it and it works very well.

    — USB PORT: —
There is a USB 2.0 port on the back of the router which allows for file and printer sharing. Simply plug in a USB hard drive or printer, and other devices across your network can access them. Awesome feature.

    — WIFI RANGE: —
I’ve only been using this router for a few days, but so far, the WiFi range seems vastly improved over my old router. I am able to get a signal in my back yard now, which was always iffy before. I used a WiFi Analyzer app to test it, and even way out in the yard, the app indicates signal strength is still good.

    — OTHER THOUGHTS: —
I wish this router could function as an access point rather than a full router. It can act as a repeater, but there’s no “AP only” setting. Granted, that’s a very specific, power user thing to need, but it’d be nice to have it for those that need it.

I also wish the antennas were replaceable. They’re not standard WiFi antennas, and can’t be replaced with long-range ones or anything. Maybe the software beam-forming requires these specific antennas.

This is newly installed but the performance of the device is excellent – setup was a breeze, throughput and range is beyond expected once I got all of the wireless channels optimized for my environment. I’m hopeful that it proves reliable (3 yr warranty is somewhat assuring). I also would like to dig into the built in firewall to ensure it is configured appropriately – not sure I trust Tenda to have a comprehensive security control set for security.

    A very good value nonetheless.

Can’t port forward a range of ports, November 3, 2016

This router seems very stable and fast. However, you can’t port forward a range of ports. It only lets you do one at a time and restricts you to 15 ports. I’ve never seen a home router not be able to do a range. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren’t for that. Stupid!!! Maybe a future firmware update will resolve this issue. I hope.
